The election of 1896, between Williams Jennings Bryant and Mckinley, was all about whether gold or silver was going to be the preferred form of Legal Tender.

"You shall not press down upon the brow of labor a crown of thorns. You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold."

Gold won.
